Non-traditional work hours present the best opportunities for high visibility media content, so our successful candidate must have the ability to often work weekends, holidays, and non-traditional hours. Commissary Manager and Curatorial Assistant
Palm Beach Zoo is seeking a Commissary Manager and Curatorial Assistant to oversee commissary operations and provide assistance to the Wildlife Care and Conservation Department. As a Commissary Manager, this role supervises the inventory, facility, staff and volunteers of the commissary. As a Curatorial Assistant, this role will assist with the coordination of tours and animal encounters, as well as the tracking, coordination and implementation of policies, procedures and protocols for the Wildlife Care and Conservation Department.
This full time position will be filled by a person who is organized, detail oriented and skilled in the management of people and inventory. Applicants should possess excellent interpersonal and written communication skills, display a positive attitude, enjoy working on a team and have proficiency using Microsoft Office programs.
Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of one year’s supervisory experience is required. Experience in an AZA accredited facility is preferred. Must be physically able to stoop, bend, reach, climb, lift, carry or push at least 50 pounds in a south Florida climate. Must be able to work a schedule which will include weekends, holidays and special events.

Tradesman / Craftsman (full-time)
The Palm Beach Zoo is currently seeking a skilled craftsman / tradesman. Applicant must have a well-rounded skill set including but limited to: carpentry, electrical, low voltage electronics, HVAC, plumbing and general facility repair and maintenance. Heavy equipment operation is helpful but not a requirement.
Regular working hours will include weekends, evenings and holidays. Days off will occur on weekdays, not weekends. Some overtime will be required. All tools, uniforms, will be provided. Excellent benefit package includes paid vacation and health insurance. A valid Driver’s License, full background check, and drug test are required. Applicants must be capable of working outdoors in a typical Florida-climate for extended periods of time and be able to lift a minimum of 80 lbs.

Marketing & Development Internship (unpaid)

The Palm Beach Zoo has internship opportunities available for undergraduate level students that are interested in gaining experience in the fields of marketing, development and event planning. Interns will participate in the following:

special event planning and implementation including but not limited to the procurement of supplies, booking of entertainment, and finding sponsors;

report preparation, visitor demographic research, and general clerical duties including returning phone calls/emails, filing, data entry, and assisting with mailings when necessary;

managing the Palm Beach Zoo's extensive photographic database and media library/archive;

researching potential donor opportunities for private donations, grants, and event sponsorships as well as assist in fund raising initiatives such as outreaches at off-site locations and with the animal painting and zoo parent adoption programs; and

assisting with grant management and reporting when needed.

Requirements: All applicants must be pursuing a degree in the areas of business, marketing, communications, recreation, or a related field and must commit to a minimum of 360 hours of work over a 15 week period as well as be able to work outdoors in a typical Florida climate. This internship opportunity is unpaid and no housing is provided. All interns must be able to work nights and weekends as needed, no holidays are required. Computer experience including Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and Power Point is a must. Due to potential exposure to non-human primates, all applicants regardless of placement must present proof of a negative TB test administered within the past year.

Animal Care Internships (Unpaid)

Animal Care interns will work side-by-side with professional animal care staff providing daily husbandry, enrichment, record keeping, exhibit maintenance, and diet preparation for the zoo's animal collection. Interns will learn the fundamentals of operant conditioning and how it is used for husbandry training purposes. Interns will also provide interpretive talks for zoo visitors, focusing on natural history and conservation education. Conservation Ambassador Animals interns will learn about animal training techniques used for visitor education and will assist with our "Wings Over Water" show and our "Wild Things" show. All applicants must commit to a minimum of 360 hours of work over a 15 week period and must be able to work outdoors in typical Florida climate and be able to lift at least 50 lbs. All applicants must be able to provide proof of a negative TB test and proof of current college enrollment or of college graduation no more than six months prior to application date. This internship opportunity is unpaid and no housing is provided. Selection preference for internships will be given to undergraduate or graduate-level students studying in the field of biology, zoology, psychology, or other related disciplines who are looking to pursue a career in zoology. Applicants that have experience within a zoological, veterinary, environmental, or rehabilitation organization are preferred. The Palm Beach Zoo's mission is to protect wildlife and wildlife habitat, and to inspire others to value and conserve the natural world. Education interns assist in meeting this mission, while gaining valuable hands-on experience. Summer internships run May 31 - August 13, part-time or full-time.

Job Description: Gain teaching and animal-handling experience by assisting with the zoo's summer camp program. Present animal encounters to campers and to the public. Lead small groups of campers in zookeeping activities. Teach science lessons. Assist education staff in developing and evaluating new curriculum. Full-time interns will complete a term project.

Requirements: Applicants should be college students with at least one year completed, or recent college graduates. Good communication and public speaking skills required. Able to interact well with children, staff, volunteers and zoo guests. Self-motivated, reliable, up-beat, and able to work outdoors in hot/humid weather. If accepted, applicants must provide proof of a negative TB test within the last year, and must pass a drug screen and background check.
