Every year, the region's goliath grouper get together to spawn. Luckily for us here in Palm Beach County, this has become among their favorite destinations! Several local shipwrecks host dozens of these sofa-sized fish in late summer and fall, and they have become a favorite among divers. In this program, the biology and conservation of the goliath grouper will be discussed, with a focus on the importance of our local reefs for the continued recovery of this long-endangered species. Host: Narcosis Dive Charters, Riviera Beach

Story Time

Date: August 2, 2014 10:30 AM
The Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society is debuting a new event geared towards encouraging children to connect with wildlife through reading, and introducing a summertime discount on admission with a Palm Beach County Library System card. “Story Time at the Zoo” will be held every Saturday in August 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Zoo’s Conservation Station. The event will be included in Zoo admission, and will include a guided tour to an animal habitat featured in the story, as well as a craft activity that can be taken home. The first three books for Story Time at the Zoo will be the following: “The Great Kapok Tree,” by Lynne Cherry, “Oopsie Otter” by Suzanne Tate and “Edward the Emu” by Sheena Knowles. All books are thoughtfully chosen with the intent of communicating the Zoo’s mission of inspiring people to act on behalf of wildlife, whether that be through a message of conservation or by connecting children to animals that are Zoo residents.

International Tiger Day

Date: July 29, 2014 11:00 AM - 3:30 PM
International Tiger Day: July 29, 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. – Celebrate International Tiger Day with the Malayan tigers, Mata and Berapi, at the Zoo! This day is held annually on July 29th to give worldwide attention to the preservation of tigers. It is both an awareness day and a celebration, founded at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in 2010 because wild tigers are too close to extinction. Many animal welfare organizations, including the Palm Beach Zoo, have pledged to help these endangered creatures, and are still helping to raise funds to reach this goal. The goal of Tiger Day is to promote the protection and expansion of the wild tigers habitats and to gain support through awareness for tiger conservation.
