Join Palm Beach Zoo staff including keepers, trainers, and educators at the 2nd annual "Strike for Conservation" bowl-a-thon presented by the Palm Beach Zoo's Chapter of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK). This year's "Strike for Conservation" will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2009 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Greenacres Bowl located in Lake Worth.
A portion of the event's proceeds will not only support the conservation efforts of the Palm Beach Zoo but will provide much needed funding to assist with the purchase of medical equipment for the newly opened Salvatore M. Zeitlin Animal Hospital, located inside the Melvin J. & Claire Levine Animal Care Complex. Funding will also be donated to several wildlife sanctuaries and refuges. Through these organizations the zoo's AAZK chapter has provided funding for numerous species of animals including the critically endangered rhino (both black and white); the world's largest land mammal the African elephant; the State of Florida's official animal, the panther; and the elusive bush dog found only in the savannahs of Central and South America.
Bowlers who acquire a minimum of $30 in sponsorships receive complimentary bowling, bowling shoes, pizza, and sodas. Children under 16 years of age only need to raise $15 in sponsorships to participate. The festive evening will be rounded out by door prizes, raffles, and giveaways.
You can help by taking part in this year's "Strike for Conservation" event or by making a direct contribution to the Chapter. Donations are tax deductible, and you do not need to be a member to join the bowl-a-thon. Sponsor forms are available by contacting the Chapter at (561) 471-5317 or via email at pbzaazk@yahoo.com.
It's snowing at the Palm Beach Zoo! That's right – it's snowing. Bring your mittens and dive into 40 tons of snow at the "coolest" event of the year! "Winter in July" was created to educate the community's children about the importance of Sun Safety while providing them the opportunity to experience the wonders of winter without leaving South Florida.
The days' events will include an avalanche of children's entertainment including non-stop children's entertainment and animal encounters. Visit the "Sand Box" and create your own cool treat, join the Banana Peel Circus and learn to juggle with Glass Productions, sit back and relax in the Florida Pioneer House as you listen to arctic-themed stories. Even the animals get into the act with "cool" animal enrichments you won't want to miss!
"Winter in July" is co-sponsored by South Florida Parenting Magazine. Sun Safety materials are generously provided by the Skin Cancer Foundation and the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation.
