West African Crowned Crane*
- Balearica Pavonina Pavonina
- These large cranes stand three to four feet tall with a wingspan of up to six feet
- They are easily recognizable for their flamboyant tuft of golden feathers that form the "crown".
- They are native to western Africa where they inhabit wetlands, open savannahs, and grasslands.
- They are omnivorous opportunists eating any plentiful items from seeds and grains to crustaceans and fish.
- Unlike many other cranes, these birds have a prehensile hind toe that allows them to roost in trees.
