Red-ruffed Lemur
- Varecia Variegata Rubra
- This species has long soft red-orange fur covering its body, with a dark face and tail, and light patch behind the head.
- Lemur means "ghost" in Malagasy, the native language of Madagascar the fourth largest island in the world.
- They are the most arboreal of the true lemurs living and feeding on fruits, flowers, and leaves of trees.
- Red-ruffed lemurs inhabit wet evergreen forests in troops of 2-30 individuals that communicate with more than 12 different calls.
- Living in large troops means this species spends much of its time grooming each other with a comb in their lower jaw that is formed by six fused incisors.
- All species of lemur are considered endangered because of the explosive population and deforestation of Madagascar.
