Red-legged Seriema*
- Cariama Cristata
- Being a relative of storks and rails, these birds stand about three feet tall on long red legs.
- Seriemas are found in open savannahs and sparsely wooded areas in central and eastern Brazil south to Argentina.
- They are omnivorous but feed mainly on animal matter, including insects, lizards, snakes, rodents, frogs, and birds.
- To kill large prey, seriemas will slam it against a rock or the ground and then rip it apart with their sharp claws.
- Locally common throughout its vast range the red-legged seriema is classified by the IUCN as a species of least concern.
