Malayan Tiger

Malayan Tiger
Panthera Tigris Jacksoni
Recently determined to be a separate sub-species, these spectacular carnivores range in size from 220 to 400 pounds and have a similar appearance to the Indochinese tiger.
The Malayan tiger is native only to the Malay Peninsula where it occurs at very low densities in forests, secondary vegetation stands, and abandoned agricultural lands.
In the wild, they feed mainly on sambar deer, wild boar, gaur, and livestock, even feeding on sun bears in parts of their range.
The two males at the Palm Beach Zoo are part of a captive population that only numbers 47 animals in North America.
With as few as 500 Malayan tigers left in the wild, this beautiful cat is listed by the IUCN as critically endangered remaining vulnerable due to logging and conflict killings.
