Helmeted Guinea Fowl*
- Numida Meleagris
- A stout game bird, the helmeted guinea fowl is covered with black feathers that are speckled white with a bare blue head and a bony cap that protrudes from the skull.
- They are the most widely distributed of all the African guinea fowl and have been domesticated for centuries.
- Occurring in large flocks, these birds can be seen scratching at the ground for beetles, ticks, seeds, and other insect prey.
- Females will make a hidden nest to deposit 20-30 eggs, caring for them unless disturbed, in which case the mother will usually abandon the nest.
Location at Palm Beach Zoo
- Roam freely throughout Zoo grounds
