- This long slender species has evolved a hinged joint along the back carapace which can close and protect its hind legs and tail
- They reside in the dry savannahs and grasslands on the outskirts of the forests in central Africa
- During the dry season they aestivate in muddy wallows of drying up lakes and ponds
- Omnivorous in the wild, they feed on vegetation and invertebrates such as worms, slugs, and insects
