A missing Roseate Spoonbill named “Teaspoon” has flown away from the Palm Beach Zoo, out of sight of zookeepers. Teaspoon is part of the Zoo’s bird show, “Wings Over Water.” She has been out of sight since approximately 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26. Now, the Palm Beach Zoo is asking the public’s help to find Teaspoon.

Teaspoon is a medium-sized bird, light pink in color, with a white underbelly. Her bill resembles a spoon. Her most distinguishing characteristic is that there is a metal band around her left leg. Zookeepers request if you see Teaspoon, to contact the Zoo immediately at (561) 533-0887 x 210.

According to zookeepers, Teaspoon was being flown by staff members on Thursday afternoon, when she decided to take a tour of the surrounding area, flying outside her normal flight zone in the theater. She eventually landed in nearby trees, where staff members continued to watch her as she settled down to “roost” (sleep) for the night.

Zookeepers were able to spot her as the sun came up, and began calling her back to the theater. She made several passes over the theater, but was unable to make the angle needed to land, so she flew back out of the theater and eventually landed in the back yard of a private residence near Dreher Park. Staff members joined her in the yard where she stuck close for about six hours. Around 3:00 p.m., cats entered the yard, spooking her into the trees, and then eventually back into the sky.

“It is common for birds that are trained for free flight to want to explore, but now she is in unfamiliar territory, and needs help finding her way home,” said Elizabeth Andersen, Zoological Manager for the Palm Beach Zoo. “She will be afraid of other animals, and possibly strange humans, so please do not run up to her if you see her.”

The Palm Beach Zoo can provide video of Teaspoon, and stock photos of other spoonbills as reference points to show the public what spoonbills look like. Again, Teaspoon’s distinguishing mark is a metal band around her left leg. if someone sees her, please have them contact the Zoo immediately at (561) 533-0887 x 210.
